For those who have chosen to build or renovate your home here in Belize you will come to realize that finding that perfect door isn’t quite as easy as you may have expected. Many of us come from North America where the big box hardware stores make it easy to pick out our doors. We don’t have those here in Belize.

You can get the basic doors, which are usually crafted out of mahogany. We call these the Mennonite doors. In some places you can get the hollow-core doors and some may or may not have inset patterns.

Another route you can go is to have your carpenter make your door. There are some very talented craftspeople here in Belize and you will find somebody who is able to carve a door for you. Expect to pay big bucks though.

The same goes for cabinet doors. Very little selection unless you have them made by a carpenter. And to take it further there isn’t a lot of selection for hardware such as drawer pulls.

Maintenance: Some materials, like wood, may need periodic care, while others, like glass or metal, are easier to maintain. Pick what suits your lifestyle.

Hardware: Knobs, handles, and hinges are small details that add personality to your doors. Opt for finishes that tie into the rest of your décor. Many of the North American stores have a selection of handles. The selections may not be as great here as you may be used to.

Colour: Don’t be afraid to get creative! Whether you want a bold statement door or a classic neutral, the color sets the tone for your space.
