Tiny Homes – Are They Safe?

Tiny homes are as safe as any other type of home. Based on the standards followed and the qualifications of the builder used to build the home they can be even safer. Did the builder pay attention to current building codes for the area? Here in Belize the Central Building Authority has some building codes that must be followed, especially as we are in a hurricane zone.

In my opinion, an RV is likely going to be less safe than most other types of tiny homes. The reason is, in most cases, they are just zinc siding over an aluminum frame. A home on wheels may also be less safe if the wind from a major windstorm if the wind can get underneath the home and potentially lift it. Connectors for the main structure to the footings are key. However these are not usually included with a mobile home or RV.

This is where it’s really important to do your research.

Belize has building codes which identify some basic codes. The codes include electrical standards, sewage or septic standards, and footing requirements based on location. As we live in a potential hurricane zone the CBA has also indicated that the home must be built to withstand category 3 storms. This protection comes as a result of properly installed hurricane straps. These tie the roof to the wall structure at the top

These codes aren’t as extensive as we might find in North America though. However there is nothing that stops you, when designing and having your tiny home built, from building to North American building standards.
