Tiny Homes – Do Tiny Homes Have to be Mobile?

Tiny homes – to be mobile or not to be mobile?

There have been many videos published by various individuals and companies and many of them show the homes built on trailer bases. This implies that the mobile home would be on wheels. And since these videos tend to be most prevalent when you do a YouTube search it’s understandable why a person may think the tiny home must be mobile.

What I did read is that as long as the tiny home is on a trailer with wheels it isn’t considered a home and therefore may be exempt from building codes. If you are unsure always reach out to the planning committee in your community.

However, again, looking at the actual definition, the ONLY condition the tiny home must fulfill is that it must be smaller than 500 square feet, or if you follow the international code, then smaller than 400 square feet.

If you continue searching on YouTube you will find other homes, not mobile, that are classified as tiny homes.

The tiny homes being built at Vanilla Bean Inn do conform to building codes. Permits have been pulled, approvals received and inspections passed. To us this was extremely important as we are in a hurricane zone. We also ensured that are waste water treatment system conforms to the Belize environmental codes. This is required because we are in an environmentally sensitive area, being 900 feet from the Caribbean Sea.
