Tiny Homes – Why Live In a Tiny Home – The Cons

Why live in a tiny home? There are pros and cons to the minimalist lifestyle that accompanies living in a tiny home. Striking the right balance is key. While minimalism and tiny home living promotes many benefits, it’s ultimately a personal choice. Find the right minimalist approach that fits your values and lifestyle.

Here in Hopkins Village, Belize there is a community of tiny homes being constructed. Focus is on your outdoor life, not the indoor life. This community is called Vanilla Bean. However, it is still a tiny home and it’s not for everybody.

Cons of a Minimalist/Tiny Home Lifestyle

  • Initial difficulty downsizing – Deciding which possessions to keep or discard and breaking cyclical consumption habits can be quite challenging initially.
  • Social barriers – The cultural norm is to accumulate material wealth over time. A minimalist lifestyle may be viewed negatively by some as radical or alternative.
  • Practical limitations – Minimalism brings advantages but taking it to an extreme could mean giving up certain modern-day conveniences and comforts that improve quality of life.
  • Family difficulties – It can be hard to practice minimalism when other family members don’t embrace the same values. Compromises may need to be made.
  • Inexpensive hobbies limited – Some activities and interests require tools, supplies or equipment that a hardcore minimalist would avoid accumulating.

As you can see the reasons against a minimalist/tiny home lifestyle are quite diverse and what is a detriment for one may not hold true for another. One thing to think about though is that obstacles can be overcome if the pros outweigh the cons.

I always suggest to my real estate clients, who need to make a decision between a couple of properties, to make a matrix. Pros and cons across the top, with the various reasons listed down the left side. Assign a value, which is completely arbitrary to each person, to the reasons under both pros and cons. Total the values and determine if that really is how you feel. Another thing I also tell my real estate clients is to be sure to include emotional considerations. These are also important.

Take a look at another article I wrote and posted about reasons for a minimalist lifestyle. It’s called An Introduction to a Minimalist Lifestyle.
